Legal Terms
Terms of Service
These Terms define how Clavis may be used for scientific visualization, analysis, rendering, account access, and paid functionality.
Last updated: May 29, 2026
1. Agreement to these Terms
These Terms of Service govern access to and use of Clavis, including the Clavis web application, documentation, analysis tools, visualization features, account pages, and paid functionality. By accessing or using Clavis, you agree to these Terms on behalf of yourself or the organization you represent.
If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use Clavis. If you use Clavis for an institution, laboratory, company, or other organization, you represent that you have authority to bind that organization to these Terms.
2. Scientific and research use
Clavis provides browser-based tools for clathrate hydrate and molecular-structure visualization, cage detection, guest occupancy analysis, trajectory inspection, rendering, and related research workflows. The service is intended to support scientific analysis; it is not a regulated medical, safety-critical, engineering-certification, legal, or compliance decision system.
You are responsible for independently reviewing all outputs, parameters, assumptions, and exported materials before relying on them in research, publication, presentations, operational decisions, or downstream computational work.
3. Accounts and security
Some features require an account. You must provide accurate account information, maintain the confidentiality of login credentials, and promptly notify us of unauthorized access or suspected misuse.
You are responsible for activity under your account, including activity by collaborators, students, contractors, or other users who access Clavis through credentials or links you control.
4. Uploaded files, analysis data, and session state
You retain ownership of molecular structures, trajectories, coordinates, metadata, images, and other files that you upload or generate. You grant Clavis a limited right to process that material solely to provide the requested functionality, operate the service, troubleshoot issues, enforce these Terms, and improve reliability and security.
Clavis is designed for interactive analysis. Certain browser-local features may store session state, visualization settings, or recoverable normal-size .gro scene data in your browser storage so accidental refresh or navigation does not discard work. Clearing browser storage, using private browsing, changing devices, or uploading large trajectory files may limit recovery.
Do not upload content that you are not authorized to process, export, share, or analyze. You are responsible for complying with laboratory, institution, sponsor, export-control, confidentiality, and data-handling obligations that apply to your files.
5. Acceptable use
You may not use Clavis to violate law, infringe rights, upload malicious code, interfere with service operation, attempt unauthorized access, scrape or reverse engineer non-public systems, bypass usage limits, resell access without permission, or use automated traffic in a way that degrades service reliability.
We may suspend or restrict access if we reasonably believe your use creates security, legal, operational, or abuse risk, or if required by a third-party service provider, payment processor, or applicable law.
6. Paid plans, trials, and billing
Paid features may include higher usage limits, path-traced rendering, video export, or other Pro functionality. Prices, entitlements, and limits may change prospectively, but changes will not reduce a paid term already purchased unless required for security, legal compliance, or service integrity.
Payments, renewals, tax handling, invoices, refunds, chargebacks, and subscription management may be processed by a merchant of record or payment provider such as Lemon Squeezy. Their terms and policies apply to payment processing in addition to these Terms.
Unless a checkout flow or applicable law says otherwise, fees are non-refundable once a billing period begins. You may cancel a subscription through the account or billing portal; cancellation generally takes effect at the end of the current paid period.
7. Intellectual property
Clavis, including its interface, documentation, design, software, graphics, workflows, and service content, is protected by intellectual-property and other laws. Except for rights expressly granted in these Terms, we and our licensors reserve all rights in Clavis.
You may use exported images, charts, tables, and analysis results that you lawfully generate from your own or authorized data, subject to these Terms and any third-party rights or citation obligations that apply to underlying algorithms, datasets, or publications.
8. Third-party services and open-source components
Clavis may rely on third-party services for authentication, payments, hosting, analytics-free operational telemetry, or infrastructure. Those services are governed by their own terms and privacy notices where applicable.
Clavis may include or interoperate with open-source software, scientific algorithms, browser APIs, WebAssembly modules, and rendering libraries. Open-source license terms continue to apply to those components.
9. Changes, availability, and experimental features
We may add, change, suspend, or discontinue features to improve scientific accuracy, performance, security, usability, or maintainability. Some analysis, rendering, export, or trajectory features may be experimental, browser-dependent, usage-limited, or subject to hardware constraints.
We do not guarantee uninterrupted availability, exact rendering parity across devices, compatibility with every .gro file, or permanent preservation of session state, uploaded files, presets, or generated outputs.
10. Disclaimers
Clavis is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, uninterrupted operation, error-free operation, and scientific accuracy for any specific use case.
You remain responsible for validating methods, cutoffs, molecule naming, periodic boundary handling, input quality, and interpretation of cage, ring, occupancy, order-parameter, rendering, or trajectory results.
11. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Clavis and its operators, contributors, licensors, and service providers will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, lost research time, publication delay, procurement delay, business interruption, or loss of goodwill.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, total liability arising out of or relating to Clavis will not exceed the amount you paid to use Clavis during the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim, or one hundred U.S. dollars (US$100) if you have not paid for the service.
12. Indemnity
You will defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Clavis and its operators, contributors, licensors, and service providers from claims, damages, liabilities, costs, and expenses arising from your uploaded content, your use of Clavis, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of law or third-party rights.
13. Termination
You may stop using Clavis at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if you materially breach these Terms, create risk for the service or other users, fail to pay amounts due, or use Clavis in a way that may expose us or others to legal, security, or operational harm.
Sections that by their nature should survive termination, including ownership, disclaimers, limitations of liability, indemnity, and payment obligations, will survive termination.
14. Updates to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date and, where appropriate, by providing notice in the app or related product surfaces. Continued use of Clavis after updated Terms become effective constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
15. Contact
Questions about these Terms, account access, paid plans, or acceptable use may be directed through the support channels provided in the Clavis application or documentation.
